Don’t know if you know this, Recky…”Dead Man Walking” is a phrase that was once used in prisons, to signify an inmate on Death Row. One hopes they don’t still use it.

A friend of mine was in the hospital when this happened. She was fortunate to survive.

It’s a year later, but I’m watching to the end, Recky. You’re not - spiritually - alone.

You can predict a path due to the rotation, amongst many orher things, but becuse it is a nature made it is sonewhat unpredictable. Meteorologists and some storm chasers who are extremely seasoned and know about tornadoes extensivly are the best at predicting paths and wind speeds...etc. They have live radar while they are out looking for possible tornadoes touching down. Im no expert but they do a great service to people by providing information as its happening in real time.

I still remember this day. I live 30 minutes to the east of Joplin and we had biohazard stickers from the hospital in our front yard. That whole afternoon was insane. My dad took off to go help but wouldn’t allow me to go with him. The destruction was disturbingly breathtaking.

I grew up in central Minnesota, which is the northern end of tornado alley. The years of 95 and 96 there was quite a few strong thunderstorms that produced a few tornados. I just wanted to make a comment regarding your observation of the atmosphere before the storm. The air feels heavy and oppressive. I remember one afternoon before a particularly nasty storm hit I walked across the farm yard and I turned around and I seen a phenomenon that I did not understand for years. There was wisps of this dark neon green coloration floating through the yard. Years later, I read a story in reader’s digest about a woman in Canada who was struck by lightning. And she described the same thing. The article explained that this thing sometimes occurs when there’s a lot of electricity in the air. And I can tell you that I could literally feel some kind of negative energy in the air. That night there was several funnel clouds and some smaller tornado touchdowns in the area, the closest past by not farther than 2 miles away.

We would take shelter in a nordic looking sod barn on the farm. Its built into a hill and reinforced with limestone. Like an underground barn. It was built couple centuries ago, and has taken direct hits over the years. You can tell it was built with care Sucker is solid.

Why are we always supposed to be Danes? Nothing wrong with Denmark, but we don't even share the same Germanic language family. (Dutch is west germanic, Danish is north germanic).

Fyi to anyone moving to tornado alley... They test the sirens at noon on sat. If there is a chance for an actual tornado, they will not do the test.

I've lived in Oklahoma for about 18 years and luckily all tornadoes have passed us. There have been some close calls, though. I miss living on the east coast where we just had hurricanes.

Recky I AM still here. This is hard to watch. I live near St. Louis, Missouri, and I've been through Joplin before this happened. The footage is still hard to wrap my mind around, so I can't imagine what it's like for you if you haven't seen this type of damage before. Unfortunately, tornados are way too common here. Luckily, very few are as strong and wide as this one, though. F5 is the strongest. Wind speeds 261-318 miles per hour (420-512 kilometers per hour).

Got lucky that day, was supposed to be working in one of the houses that is gone now, had my coworker call in so dispatcher took that job to lighten the load for the day, so I ended up in gretna instead but was still able to see if off in the distance

Something to boggle your mind on how people manage to live in Tornado Alley. The largest ever recorded outbreak of tornadoes in Europe was in 1981 in the UK. 104 tornadoes were recorded, with 21 of unknown strength, 24 F0s, 57 F1s, and 2 F2s. With the change to the EF scale, it's possible the two F2s would today be rated as EF1s, though I can't say for sure. This was almost challenged by the recent 2020 outbreak where 82 tornadoes touched down. Those two are by far the largest outbreaks in European history. The last US outbreak just happened between April 26 and 28th of this year and it produced 138 tornadoes. 13 of unknown strength, 40 EF0s, 59 EF1s, 16 EF2s, 8 EF3s, and 1 EF4. Just 13 months earlier, a similar sized outbreak occured in the northern half of Tornado Alley. That outbreak consisted of 146 tornadoes. 9 of unknown strength, 44 EF0s, 49 EF1s, 32 EF2s, 11 EF3s, and 1 EF4. So in little over a year, the US had more or less more tornadoes in two major outbreaks than all of Europe had since 1991 combined.

Tornado Alley runs Thur quite a few states.

Tornado alley is : Texas -Oklahoma-Kansas-Missouri-South Dakota-North Dakota-Nebraska-Iowa but, Michigan- has had an F5 in flint that killed many and one of the deadliest of all time I believe top 5 . June 8th 1953

In Alberta Canada we do have tornadoes but for the past several years we have been dealing with Fire Season. Fires create their own tornadoes. For more information google Fort MacMurry Fire.....we are in it again, thousands evacuated this week.

Just recently, there was a quad-state tornado.

My family and I were impacted by the EF4 from Iowa last April. This year, I got married in April. We had a tornado outbreak in Iowa 2 days before the wedding, came back home to Nebraska, and we were impacted by this tornado outbreak. Tornado sirens were blaring from about 2 pm until after 7 pm. 2 or 3 more tornados just missed us not long after the Elkhorn tornado. Our friends lost their home. Every storm that came near Lincoln and Omaha that day just exploded! One tornado producer rolled through, and another was right on its heels. I've never seen anything like it! We kept thinking maybe the storms would eat up the atmosphere, and things would calm down, but it just never happened. We had more warnings and watches the next day. 😱 Pretty much the only nice days we had were the wedding day and the weekend after. After that, things went absolutely nuts for a month.

The Jarrell, TX and Moore, OK tornadoes were also devastating like this one.

A hurricane is not the same as a tornado. Hurricanes start in the ocean, usually the south Atlantic, often peters out befor hitting land, but when they do, they tend to damage coastal areas in Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia and the East coast of the US. Most damage is due to storm surge as ocean water is pushed inland, and of course the wind can do damage as well. You can see and track hurricanes days before they get close to land masses. Meteorologists can do a fair job predicting a hurricanes course, so there's plenty of notice. Tornados start over land when thunderstorms develop wind action in columns perpendicular to the ground. Generally they originate in the central US, and can travel hunrdeds of miles cross country. Damage is usually from these winds, and projectiles thrown by the winds. Tornados can occur over land anywhere when conditions are right from them. Sadly, tornados are not nearly as easy to predict as a hurricane, and can pop up with little advance notice.

In the greater Tulsa metropolitan area, the NWS tests our sirens every Wednesday at noon, given that the weather is clear.

I remember the one tornado I lived through…the air was so still and everything was so quiet. It was chilling.

Nothing would have happened had the tornado hit the nuke carrying bombers. Nuclear warheads, modern ones, do not use a radioactive core, rather they use an isotope detonator with deuterium. They don't produce fallout like fission based nukes (e.g. Little Boy and Fat Man). Had they been hit or damaged, without the system being armed, no detonation would have occurred of the nuclear detonation system. Onboard fuel may ignite, but the deuterium wouldn't.

Even with an EF5 tornado, sheltering in your basement is usually sufficient. With any tornado it depends on many factors and how your home is constructed however, so it's always best to have a dedicated shelter spot in your basement or a storm shelter setup if you live in a region prone to tornadoes.

In metro Atlanta, Cobb County specifically, our emergency sirens are tested at noon every Wednesday. We can hear a harmony of 3 different rotating horns. Very eerie sound.

I live in Oklahoma City on 63 years old and all my life we had tested The warning systems every week year-round and most of these tornadoes he's talking about happened at spring Time but that's not always the case we've had tornadoes in December and January as well like the Union City tornado

Tornado Alley is located in the region that affects Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas and a few more states in mid America. Dixie Alley affects Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, etc.

I live within 45 min of Waco, see that Alico building all the time. And I witnessed the Jarrell tornado, and aftermath, in 1997, horrific and tragic. Living where I do, this is why I glued my ..... to my ......., again! 😂
